This is a 4-day residential workshop learning how to make the L’al Yak (Little Oak) basket bag designed by Lorna.
Tutoring will take place 9.30am – 5pm on 23,24,25 & 26th June. Participants are expected to arrive after 5.30pm on 22nd June for an introduction to the course and stay until the morning of 27th June.
The L’al Yak basket is based on the traditional pack baskets of North America and European countries, scaled down for practical daily use and adapted to use local materials and the traditional Cumbrian process of swill-basketry.
The course covers a lot of skills. You will learn how to handle the strips of oak, dress them with a knife, rive them further and shape the basket as it is woven and complete the basket with a ‘sandwich and sew’ rim. You will cut the strap and lid from a hide of British oak-bark tanned leather and learn the leather-working techniques needed to complete the basket.
Skill level: intermediate.
Basic weaving technique. Handling oak, repetitive knife work and leather stitching requires some hand strength and perseverance. Some knife skills would be useful.
Accommodation is in a eco bunkhouse 7 miles north of Kendal. A couple of camping plots are also available if you would prefer to sleep in a tent.
The course is fully catered with a vegan diet
