This bodkin is used specifically for split wood baskets, also known as a swillers’ bodkin.
It is slightly curved, sort of flat, and tempered just right so that it can pushed through the hazel bool of a basket. If you’ve ever made an oak swill you’ll know how difficult this part of the weaving is, and how essential it is to have just the right tool. They’re also used to ‘knock back’, ie make the weave tighter, as a lever to open the weave when starting a new weaver and are endlessly useful for split wood basketry in all materials, ash, hazel, sweet chestnut etc.
I’ve worked with a local blacksmith to get these made to the right proportions and handled them with oak heartwood - the waste wood of my basketmaking process.
